Celebrating 50 Years of Doctor Who with The 11th Doctor & River Song
So much Party Swag for Guests it was compared to The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Yes! Doctor Who! The longest running science fiction television show in human history! It's been such a profound adventure as a newly obsessed and and apparently lifelong Whovian, we'll get to that a bit later, it's quite easy to see after my Twin Flame and Sweetie: The 11th Doctor got me instantly hooked on my 26th birthday. After years of wanting to watch it badly but being deprived of BBC compliments of American Cable Companies it was nearly impossible to see the television show that so many friends and psychic clients informed me about due to the striking similarity of my personal psychic adventures in this universe to the very profoundly accurate ones that this brilliant television show has turned into a legacy. It started out in the 1950's as a children's television show meant to open the minds of children to wonderous and creative ideas as well as actually touching on very real topics that each of us human beings struggle through on our travels throughout life. From grief, abandonment, love, friendship, unity, laughter during the most awful times and so much more beautifully complex ideas woven throughout space and time in this magical show, no wonder it's been around for now over 50 years!
According to Wikipedia:
Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme produced by the BBC. The programme depicts the adventures of the Doctor, a Time Lord—a time-travelling humanoid alien. He explores the universe in his TARDIS, a sentient time-travelling space ship. Its exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. Along with a succession of companions, the Doctor faces a variety of foes while working to save civilisations, help ordinary people, and right wrongs.
My First Adventure with The Doctor, or so I thought...
It was a beautiful sunny April day and my Twin Flame and I decided after much discussion over the past busy weeks of birthday parties and mid-term exams that it was time for us to find a show we could both not only enjoy on all sentient levels together but one that's been around long enough to prevent us from screaming in unison as the season of Game of Thrones, or other brilliantly written series left us for months grueling over a cliffhanger. After being told numerous times from friends and very spiritually gifted ones at that about the brilliance and spiritual accuracy of the television show I was more than compelled to prepare my time traveling bags and jump aboard the TARDIS, if I only knew now how incredible this journey would be I'd never truly be able to express how in awe I am of the workings of the universe. We sat down and started watching the newer series version which starts with The 9th Doctor known infamously as Christoper Ecceleston. The show was a bit weird at first the debut episode being very campy and raw in my opinion but like all the best vintage television shows from the 80's and 90's it instantly struck a deep chord of profound nostalgia and seeing the beautiful Rose Tyler and the quite child like and handsome 9th Doctor running away from what appeared to be the most creepy of all mannequins with a motive to kill was instantly exciting! From that moment on we immersed ourselves in the television show, every moment, every day and night we could watch Doctor Who we very much did, especially in hopes of reaching the end of the newer series that was re-released and also relaunched Doctor Who in 2005 by the time The 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who arrived so that we too could celebrate the fantastic journey of The Doctor.
Months went by and still we were both excited by each episode with The Doctor, from The 9th, The 10th all the way to The 11th Doctor, my sweetie, we laughed together, cried together, discussed very real and at times frightening concepts of spiritualism that I endured during the times when my powers were very new and very untamed this was a normal phase in any psychic or witches developmental process but nonetheless when Tooth and Claw hits such a deep chord as to recall a very real and frightening experience in my youth well needless to say even this Psychic was profoundly moved and am often in awe as to how vividly these stories and real life psychic adventures are depicted by the show's writers, even the beings from Andromeda are very accurately depicted to the beings that helped and continue to help heal me from time to time, but we'll get into those fun stories at a later date. Then it finally struck us after realizing that we did finish the newer series and had time now to watch Classic Who until the big anniversary viewing on November 23rd!
Lets throw the biggest and best 50th Anniversary Viewing Party this Country has ever seen!
That one moment in time and space perpetuated one of the longest planned and most amazing party I've thrown to date. Here's how to have a Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Viewing Party, that not only will they keep talking about but was compared to The Rocky Horror Picture Show with the amount of party swag that was available for guests and co-hosts The 11th Doctor & Professor River Song
DIY Doctor Who Party
Party Planning 101: The Basics
Being that it was in celebration of 50 years of Doctor Who, I decided to combine the classic TARDIS blue colors with gold for The Golden Anniversary of Doctor Who! Once the theme and decoration colors were selected I started searching around my cosplay groups and social circles for those special whovians that I truly wanted to celebrate the big day with.
The most fun about selecting which whovians to invite was realizing that not only did most already have costumes according to their character choice in the show was that every friend of mine was very unique like each companion in their character for not only the evening but the one companion of Doctor that they personally felt close too in spirit and in personality. The 11th Doctor and I were very happy to have the following guests and companions at our glorious celebration
The 11th Doctor & River Song: Jimi & Bella
Donna Noble & Captain Jack Harkness: Cortney & Alex
Amy Pond & Rory Williams: Alisha & Robert
Rose Tyler, The 9th Doctor & The Knight of Jaffa: Krystal, Chris & Richard
River Song, The 9th Doctor & The 10th Doctor: Lydia, Rodney & Solom
Monty: The TARDIS
It was pretty easy to e-vite guests through Facebook and due to such a lavished event and costly one at that, I required a Yes or No RSVP Response and Deadline Date to save myself and my sweetie the additional stress and worry about tying up loose ends a midst our Doctor Who party planning, this was a wonderful solution and even though our wonderful TARDIS wasn't able to attend her presence was very much in attendance. This is a lifesaving idea for any party planner that wants to have hair left after planning every element of a wonderful theme party celebration.
The most difficult aspect of these invitations was the dimensions, without Amazon.com I'd never have found the corresponding TARDIS blue envelopes that went with these exquisite invitations found on Etsy
Party Planning 102: Shopping!
Celebrating a Transcontinental Party can be quite costly especially when in need of specific and very rare to find in America British Food, so to efficiently save as much money as possible to put towards, decorations, food, beverages and prizes I searched around my home to find every piece of furniture, home decor and party supplies to display a gorgeous setting for the big day.
Around the homestead I was able to repurpose a antique silver vase that I found at a thrift store ages ago, for Sunflowers and Roses the complimentary flowers that corresponded to characters and companions Rose Tyler & Amy Pond. I also found a wonderful picnic basket that my parents recently gave me, I used it for the first time ever at The Gaslamp Societies 2nd Annual Victorian Cemetery Picnic with it's ironically TARDIS blue colors for both serving wear and interior it was perfect to use for the Madame De Pompadours (Episode: The Girl in the Fireplace) Prize Basket which held the 3 prizes given away to guests for participating in the costume contest and secret games played throughout the evening. Having a bit of a passion for French Decor, I easily utilized lace, faux pearls and a lovely french maiden statue to add pomp and circumstance to this lovely prize basket. My love even found the perfect cylindrical jar to repurpose into a Doctor Detector. Repurposing Doctor Who blankets and others as backdrops for photos was also a huge hit, along with the endless Dalek's printed on cardstock that flew in the air on wire hitting each Doctor & Companion in the head as they fought their way to the Tea & Treats Table. With DIY it only ends with your imagination, fortunately mine is Epic!
Step #2 Thrift Store Hunts
After gathering most of the items needed for repurposing I made a list of things I'd still need for the big party, we intended on serving traditional English Tea with our treats and so investing in a dozen cups and saucers was quite the inexpensive and classy way to add pomp and circumstance to such a day. Each guest had their own tea cup and saucer, and I was fortunate enough to find the most divine antique silver teapot for a steal at $10.00 spending only $25.00 total for a complete tea set in Japanese theme, a common visiting place and genre in Doctor Who, and additional cups and saucers, as well as finding table cloths and decoration items it was a very successful adventure around Fresno Thrift Store Hunting.
Step #3 DollarTree Decorations
Office Depot was my main squeeze for needed items from decorative and flexible wiring in TARDIS blue that helped me decorate the entire house to the very much used and required cardstock for printing invitations, printing decorations and all the odds and ends were found there. I then ventured to my local Dollar Tree, they're known in Tower District for carrying party supplies out the wazoo, sadly not much else but on a day like today they were perfect for what I needed! Serving dishes for Fishfingers and Custard, to shot glasses that were filled with glitter and turned into Feels Shots to paper bags for Jellybabies to champagne glasses for sparkling cider and party poppers, streamers and confetti to add the rest of the the over the top pomp to this glorious circumstance! The endless cardstock was wonderful to print endless memorable moments from Doctor Who and they showered the treats table and also the curtains all over the house for sentimental moments with each guests favorite characters.
Step #4 E-Shopping!
Amazon & Etsy were my go-too's for endlessly odd supplies I had in mind, like the blue cupcake boxes that I turned into Feels Boxes or individual tissue boxes painted in gold with quotes from Doctor Who as well as 50 Years on one side that really popped to the very essential Jammie Dodgers and Jelly Babies that were shipped and received just in time from over the pond for the big day, these two websites provided every essential item needed for the big day! I even found the most incredible tea with The 9th Doctor & 10th Doctor's characters emblazoned on the side!
Step #5 DIY Handmade Whovian Items
Doctor Who Framed Images:
A Special Gift I made for my Sweeties Birthday last year, adorned the table with our most romantic and favorite depictions of The Doctor and His River Song.
Shot Glasses Full of Feels:
Instead of liquor we chose blue and green star glitter, to represent the 10th & 11th Doctor the most recent and memorable of New Who. Each guest received a shot glass to toss at their favorite scenes during the 50th anniversary special but I must say the best response that we were both hoping for was Rose Tyler being overwhelmed by seeing a glimmer of The 9th Doctor squealed like a fan girl and excitedly spilled all the stars everywhere and mostly all over herself! Needless to say My Sweetie and I were both very ecstatic and laughed with glee, as did the rest of our guests.
Jelly Babies & Bookmarks Take-Home Bags
Instead of sending out Thank You notes weeks later I wanted to do it all in one step, so I made some amazing bookmarks with quotes about how special and important books are with the images of the 10th & 11th Doctor on them, each bookmark came along with a special Thank You Bookmark that gave gratitude for each guests arrival and also to give them a special reminder of that wonderful party we all shared together in Whoivan Unity. The 4th Doctor was known for his love of Jellybabies in a Brown Paper Sack so we decided to go Classic Who and make that our take-home bags.
Crossword Puzzles, Paper TARDIS Cut-Out Game, Whovian Flyers of Warning! & The Gallifreyan Alphabet
With so much fun and excitement nobody had the time to make a paper TARDIS or to enjoy a Dalek themed crossword puzzle, however they did enjoy the game of tearing down Whovian Flyers that warned of Weeping Angels & The Silence. By the end of the evening most had also taken a companion found on a flyer with cut and tear images and most were gone along with the goodies and treats. Gallifreyan alphabets were also sent home with guests so they could practice their penmanship, before the night was over a couple of guests had scribbled down their names in our native time-lord tongue well done!
After searching foe ages for blue boxes that were small, I found cupcake boxes and repurposed them as Feels Boxes. I cut an X into the plastic top after assembling each by hand and stuffed them with tissue for tears of joy or sadness as Doctor Who is infamous for both. They were adorned with classic quotes in gold paint and "50 Years!" was branded on the front to celebrate this special occasion.

Party Planning 103: Food
After months of searching and honestly receiving more hostile responses from cupcake designers unable to meet the challenge of a Custom Gluten Free & Vegan Doctor Who Cupcake I was quite anxious wondering who would fulfill this order or would I have to add DIY Cupcakes to my already long list of party items for the evening, fortunately for award winning service I went with Tower Districts very own Frosted Cakery, Not only were they more than excited to tend to every detail of my Doctor Who Cupcakes but they offered delicious Vegan and Gluten Free Options that propelled 12 time lords to devour them before I could even snap pictures! Fortunately I saved the custom made cupcake toppers I created with photo shop and also snagged a few photos of identical cupcakes to give you the experience that my guests had first hand.
The Cupcake Game & Prize!
After Scouring Etsy I found the most exquisite hand wrapped and stamped "Bad Wolf" Ring So the unknown game went according to plan, Whomever chose The 9th Doctor out of all 12 Doctors won The Bad Wolf Ring! I was very stoked to see that it went to Rose Tyler's Love, The 9th Doctor.
910 TARDIS TEA
Jammie Dodgers & Jelly Babies
After finding 9th & 10th Doctor Tea on Etsy I was more than excited to ambiguously word the invitations to keep guests eager with anticipation, was this a room? What was this mysterious number, and there's Jammie Dodgers and Jelly Babies! Sign me Up! Thanks to the lovely Magnus at Beastly Beverages my exquisite Doctor Who Tea arrived from our Whovian cousins across the pond just in time for High Doctor Tea!
The Tea Game & Prize!
Since aristocracy gave us High Tea in the first place I figured a special present for a lovely Whovian from Madame De Pompadour's Private Collection would be in order, Thanks to the wonderful designers at OceanPatch on Etsy I was able to find a very classic French Toilette Bag, with a Special Doctor Who Twist of TARDIS & Daleks roving around the classic French Countryside. The 10th Doctor our youngest Whovian guest gave the prize to his other The Other River Song since he wasn't prepared to win, the secret word was Alonsy! He was the first to say it due to it being his characters favorite catchphrase and so he won the prize!
Dark Chocolate Daleks & TARDIS
After searching for the perfect mold we found one on ThinkGeek, with 3 Daleks and 3 TARDIS in this chocolate and ice cube mold I was more than excited to make Dark Chocolate Whovian treats for guests. After tons of chocolate and endless melting, The 11th Doctor made the most decadent and perfectly molded Dalek's and Tardis that adorned each plate and also filled more than a few take-home bags with these lovely treats. The best part? Biting the heads of the Chocolate Daleks!
11th Doctor Fez's & Bow-Ties
To keep with the theme of my Sweeties last season, I was so pleased to find the most delicious organic fruit rolls at Trader Joes and also finding Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups was perfect for The Fez's! These were very popular and after The 11th Doctor did some excellent carving with an scalpel each fruit strip looked like a bow tie and like the Fez's of my Sweetie they were gone at the shot of a gun!
Fish Fingers & Custard!
As the Doctor regenerated into his 11th Face, it was hilarious to every Whovian that the only thing that tasted proper was Fish Fingers and Custard, It was wicked fun leaving guests to wonder for months if that was actually going to be on the menu, and yes it was, with a sweet vegan twist of course! River Song found an amazing recipe for Vegan Lady Fingers, they were perfect for Fish Fingers. After searching for weeks I found an amazing Vegan Custard Recipe and we served it chilled and it was gone before the photos were taken!
Grand Prize for Best Costume!
After Captain Jack started a sexiest butt competition after the Lemon Shandy & Apple Orchard Ale flowed into the night, My Sweetie and I were wrangled into a Right Said Fred "I'm Too Sexy For My Shirt" dance-off that started the costume brigade to dance, strut on the catwalk and after voting with eyes closed, except for the guests who were peeking! It was unanimous that The 10th Doctor our youngest Whovian WON The Costume Contest! With photos of his outfit below, as well as The Unauthorized Doctor Who Cookbook, The 10th Doctor made out like a bandit and left with 2 major prizes for the evening.
